These Dogs Are Tired
I know it's been a while since I've posted, and I promised more, but the teaching has been rather all-consuming. Since I'm starting from scratch with all my lesson plans, tests, and pretty much everything else, it's been a huge game of keeping on top of things these last couple weeks. But the second full week is through, we've had our first pep rally, my grading's just about all caught up, and a goodly number of my students seem to be not only learning something, but even enjoying the classes a bit. Soon, I'll even be able to get ahead of the game, and start planning not only for the week I'm in, but for the weeks to come as well.

One thing I'd not taken into account was the amount of time I'd be on my feet. After an eight hour sit-down job, it's rough to be standing and moving around the room most of the day. I've noticed some teachers like to just perch on a chair behind the podium, but I've found I've gotta be moving. It seems to help me think and convey information better. And so, my legs are getting far more of a workout than I'd anticipated, but I think they're finally getting used to it.

Another thing I'd not anticipated was how much reading students' writing improves my own ability to spot bad grammar. If kashi had not been here to help edit the novel for me, it'd be a shambles. But now, I find I'm growing as observant and exacting as she is. And you know what else? I actually kinda like grading. I haven't figured out why yet, and it is rather exhausting, but I still like it. Even some of the egregiously bad English is not so bad, once you realise you can make suggestions that the student might actually take to heart, and which might improve said student's writing for the future. Maybe a bit foolishly optimistic of me, but I don't care.

Oh, also, I finally got my grades from the classes I took through UD's Dante program--a B and an A-. Verily, I am thrilled about it. Still waiting to hear from my teacher about my class materials being uploaded to her server as she promised, but I'll post a link here soon as I can. Happily, I'm actually going to be able to use several parts of my classwork for teaching on Poe and Hawthorne.

Anyway, that be about it for now.

I Teach, Therefore I Collapse
Hate to use Descartes, since I more or less despise his work, but it just seemed so appropriate.

I finished my second short day of teaching today. Had a Freshman homeroom and one Freshman English class yesterday, and then everyone (my Freshmen, and four Junior English classes) today. Mostly just syllabus and class structure talk, and I likely won't get much into actual content teaching until Monday, but I'm doing it, surviving, and lo and behold, I think I kinda like it. As a new teacher, I have no classroom of my own, so I get to take a whirlwind tour of the school as I move from class to class. It's a bit exhausting and it was quite a relief to finally get out of my last class for the day; but the in-class stuff so far is good, and I think I've got a fairly decent group of young minds to mold and shape. Tomorrow's the first full schedule day, so we'll see how that goes, but methinks I may finally have found a home.

Quiz
Well, I hope this doesn't dishearten my new students...

You scored as Severus Snape.

Well you're a tricky one aren't you? Nobody quite has you figured out and you'd probably prefer it stayed that way. That said you are a formidable force by anyone's reckoning, but there is certainly more to you than a frosty exterior and a bitter temper.

Whoa
I could not do a more perfect Keanu impression. Just chatted with friend and former roommate Frank. For those who know Frank, please sit down.

  1. Frank has paid off all his student loans, is now solvent, and is going back to school for his BA in Criminal Justice.

  2. Frank has a permanent full-time security job for the Ren Faire circuit.

  3. And last, but most certainly not least, Frank's getting married.

Our prayers for him and VK have been answered! I'm stunned. Stunned, I say.

And thrilled! Wow!

So, without further ado: Congratulations, Frank and VK!
